The Championship was first played at Formby in 1938. The first day of the Championship is an 18 hole Medal Round for women with handicaps of 20.4 and under, and who are 50 years of age on the first day of the Championship, which is also the date of the Silver Meeting.

The Silver Meeting is a medal round, for which there is a prize for the Best Gross, presented by the President of the Association, and 4 nett prizes.

The best 16 gross scores qualify for matchplay over two days. The Champion for the year is presented with the Championship Trophy, which is a silver salver, and the Captain of the Association's Prize. The Runner Up receives a prize and the Runner's Up Trophy, which is also a silver salver, presented by the Association in 2008.

The 2019 Championship and Silver Meeting was held at the West Lancashire Golf Club from 8th to 10th May.  The Championship in 2020 will be held at Fairhaven Golf Club.
