Richardson Trophy Match Reports 2025

Lancashire vs Cumbria

Our first Richardson Trophy match of the year was an away fixture on 9th of May at Seascale Golf Club. The weather was beautiful, sunny and dry, and the course was running very fast. The match was exciting and ended with a hard fought draw with the teams sharing the points 3½ - 3½.

Lancashire vs Northumberland

We had a very windy and challenging links golf day for our match against Northumberland at Royal Birkdale. The match was not going our way on the front nine, but a great fight on the back nine saw the 'red roses' finish ahead by six games to one. The weather gods were on our side, as it stopped raining just as we started to play and rained heavily again afterwards. Heavy rain in those high winds would have been very unpleasant! Thanks to the team for a spectacular back nine performance.

Lancashire vs Cheshire

We enjoyed pleasant weather for our match vs Cheshire at Sandiway GC on 24/8/25. Cheshire have won the Richardson Trophy for the last eight years, so this was a big challenge!

Our star red roses team rose to the occasion and we defeated Cheshire by 4½ - 2½. Our Champion Sharon really led from the front and played great golf. There were three halved matches, so it was a really close contest.  Congratulations to all of our star team who played great golf, and many thanks to all of our wonderful caddies for their assistance. I am a very proud Captain!

Lancashire vs Yorkshire

We played our match vs Yorkshire at Wakefiled GC which was extremely dry and bouncy following the recent spell of warm and dry weather. Temperatures were lower in Wakefield than we had left at home, so we were scrambling to find our red jumpers!

Our Champion Sharon once again led from the front and managed to win a very close match with the Yorkshire Champion, playing great golf. With a few holes to play we were down in most matches, Yorkshire were playing well, and it did look as if we might lose our unbeaten record. However Carol managed to win on the 17th and then Jacqui and Sarah both played some great closing holes to get us to 3.5 points and half the match. So it was a good half on a difficult away course. We preserved our unbeaten record!

Sadly the Cheshire team now have more game points than we can muster and will retain the Richardson Trophy. But the team played very well and this was an excellent performance on a tricky course. Well done team!

Our hosts from Yorkshire were very welcoming and hospitable and the match was played in an excellent spirit.

Lancashire vs Durham

We enjoyed some nice warm weather for our last Richardson Trophy match of the year at Royal Birkdale. Our team started very well, and most were ahead at the 9th hole. A sharp squally shower came as a bit of a surprise after generally clear weather. Our players at the front of the order continued well and won three out of the first four matches. But Durham fought back in the closing holes, and made it a much tighter finish than had looked likely just a short time before. The match finished with a 4-3 victory, with some good wins and the losses were all very tight games.

At the end of the season we tie with Cheshire on match points won, but they just pip us on count back with more game points secured. However this is our best year since 2014, and we can all see there is room for progress with more home matches next year. Thanks to all of our star team for some really great performances in 2025, and onwards and upwards for 2026! Thanks to Durham for an enjoyable and interesting match.
